TM HERCULES
OVERVIEW
With its sheer size of 2.20 by 2.20 meters and the constant movements of the open clockwork the TM HERCULES (formerly TM4) provokes a reaction of fascination, amazement and admiration. An impressive component is the 1.80 meter anchor wheel with the diagonally running anchor beam, the heart of the patented Orbital Drive™. This has two sun wheels circling around the escape wheel, which, with their fine spiral springs, buffer the drive energy at every cycle and thus keep the drive in constant, steady movement.
The TM HERCULES has a mechanical clockwork with a weight suspended on the side, which is periodically and silently wound up by a 12V micromotor. These Time Machines weigh between 45 and 70 kg, depending on model and material.

The “Classic” with Its filigree profile and skeleton-like structure reveals a thrilling insight into the clockwork and gear train. It is the reduced to the max version, making the pure enjoyment of time possible by marvelling the components silently moving from one time unit to the next one. It is delivered either in a combination of black and gold or black and chrome.
The design of the Metamorphosis line was deliberately created as a counterpart to the Classic. The clear, simple contours of the TM4 were abandoned and random and chaotic pattern combinations used instead. A honeycomb-like Voronoi pattern renders the metamorphosis somewhat unpredictable, and yet harmonious. The TM HERCULES “Metamorphosis” is either made of aluminum or in a top version, in Carbon structure as the most recognizable feature from the aircraft or formula 1 industry.

THE CREATOR
Florian’s career path began when he graduated from Lucerne’s art school
in 1980 as a sculptor. After travelling the world for two years on a self-made motorcycle, he decided to further his education in the field of mechanics and attended Zentralschweizer Technikum in Lucerne, earning a diploma in mechanical engineering in 1988.
«Every innovative product I developed in my life arose from a problem for which no solution existed», Schlumpf explains. One innovation was derived from a personal experience. «When I climbed a steep mountain pass with my old bicycle and was forced to dismount because there were no gears low enough for pedalling all the way, I suddenly had the idea for the «mountain drive» bottom-bracket gearing system.
Ten years later, Schlumpf developed a hub for unicycles, which is in use by the world’s top unicyclists in races to reach speeds of 40 km/h and more, as well as unicycles for daily commuting. In 2011, the patents and production rights of the bicycle gearing system were acquired by a German group, opening the door to new opportunities for Schlumpf to explore new fields of interest in clocks and precision mechanisms. The first Time Machine, the TM1, was introduced at BaselWorld in 2014 as a purely artistic experience with no indication for time.

Orbital Drive™
This patented mechanism provides a steady rotation of the wheelwork, while the anchor wheel is in a “stop-and-go” mode only. During rotation, energy flows into the small sun wheel, which contains a spiral spring, and back to the anchor wheel. The steady motion leads not only to a powerful and wide pendulum swing but also to a very economical operational mode.
Schlumpf Tooth Profile
The TM4 combines a conventional cycloidal gear with a special design of lantern cog: self-lubricating bronze bushings run on hardened and high-polished pins. This reduces friction to the absolute minimum.
Spring loaded anchor pallets
The patented spring- loaded anchor pallets is one more important design innovation. While hitting the anchor pin, the pallet doesn’t lose all the energy during the impact but conserves the driving force through a smooth tensioning of the pallet, which is made of high-tech spring steel. This is one more contribution to a very effective and nearly silent operational mode.
Carbon
Schlumpf has produced a special edition of the TM4 Metamorphosis in a striking Carbon / Texalium finish. The Carbon has been exclusively produced for this Time Machine and is a composition of Carbon as used in Formula One and the Aircraft industries.
